We would like to congratulate all of our pupils on their GCSE results this year. It is a pleasure to witness their achievements as a result of their tremendous hard work over the course of the year.  Once again, our GCSE results were outstanding overall. We are very proud of our pupils!

Business Fair, 18th July 2014
 

The annual Business Fair this term was a busy and sucessful event once again. Traditionally organised by our pupils and staff, the Business Fair remains an integral event on the school calendar as part of the school’s Business and Enterprise specialism. The event this year saw an increase in scale and the number of pupils taking part.

Parade Day, 14th July 2014
 

Our annual Parade Day took place on Saturday 12th July 2014 with our Army Cadets, Girl Guides, Scouts and St. John Ambulance Cadets on parade. The event was a wonderful celebration of our uniformed services and was concluded by inspiring speeches delivered by Master Dennis Woods from the Worshipful Company of Fuellers, which provides generous support to the school, and the Deputy Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Anyanwu.

Awards Evening 2014, 4th July 2014
 

The annual Awards Evening this term was a well-deserved celebration of our Key Stage 3 pupils' achievements over the entire academic year. We were pleased to see the many different awards being presented to our pupils. These included awards for outstanding attainment and progress and the Headteacher's Awards.

Graduation Evening, 30th June 2014
 

Graduation Evening this year was a perfect conclusion to a hard working and productive year for our Year 11 pupils.  Many special awards were presented on the evening and the event concluded with a spectacular graduation dinner at the Croydon Park Hotel, attended by both staff and pupils to see off another successful year.

Platanos College participates in the Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme, which aims to recognise, reward and celebrate the achievements of our pupils.

We are delighted that, once again, our pupils were recipients of numerous Jack Petchey Awards this month in recognition of their achievements this year.

International Evening, 23rd May 2014
 

Our annual International Evening, traditionally organised by our pupils, parents, carers and staff, took place successfully again this week.

The event saw an increase in attendance and in the scale of the activities on show and celebrated the cultural diversity at Platanos College with entertaining acts and a wonderful variety of food.

Jack Petchey 'Speak Out' Final 2014, 16th May 2014
 

Earlier this week, two of our pupils reached the Jack Petchey 'Speak Out' Final 2014 - the UK's largest youth speaking competition. Both Abdullah Suleman and Caterina Pereira delivered oustanding speeches during the event.

Lambeth Schools Athletics Championship, 16th May 2014
 

Our athletes returned with winners' medals today from the Lambeth Schools Athletics Championship 2014. Our athletes excelled in the highly competitive, annual event and have now been selected to represent the borough in the London Schools Athletics Championship!

Phoenix Book Award 2014, 5th May 2014
 

Our pupils in 7A took part in the Phoenix Book Award 2014 last week. Two of our pupils' book reviews were recognised as two of the best reviews this year at the awards ceremony.

Dragons' Den competition, 28th April 2014
 

The challenge of the Dragons' Den competition was met by a large number of pupils this year as part of the school's Business and Enterprise programmes. 

Our winners this year is 'T-vibez', a team from Year 9 who have won the funding to put their business plan into action.

Earlier in the term, our Year 10 pupils took part in the annual Jack Petchey 'Speak Out' selection competition - the UK's largest youth speaking competition.

The Achievement Awards last term celebrated the achievement of our pupils in Key Stage 3. A record number of prizes were awarded recognising the hard work our pupils have demonstrated so far this year.

Educational trip to Belgium, 7th April 2014
 

Last week, our pupils studying GCSE History had the valuable opportunity to attend a trip to Ypres, Belgium.  Pupils on the fascinating trip visited the historical sites on which the First World War was fought 100 years ago.

Sport Relief fund-raising, 21st March 2014
 

In a joint enterprise between our pupil-led Charity Committee, Business Committee and Girl Guides, a charity cake sale was organised today. A total of £120 was raised for Sport Relief. A big thank you to all those that contributed!

  

Dragons' Den competition, 3rd March 2014
 

The Platanos College Dragons' Den competition relaunches today after its previous successes. The competition, part of the school's Business and Enterprise programmes, is open to all Key Stage 3 pupils at Platanos College.

Pupils must submit a Business Plan and present to a Dragons' Den panel in a bid to win funding for their business idea.

Anne Frank Exhibition, 17th February 2014
 

The Anne Frank Exhibtion returned this year due to its success in previous years. The pupil-led exhibition explores the topics of prejudice, civil rights and conflict.

As part of the work-related programme at the school, some of our Year 11 pupils attended a workshop at Lambeth College and gained some impressive skills.

Girl Guides at CNY, 3rd February 2014
 

Our Girl Guides enjoyed a trip to the Chinese New Year celebrations in China Town and Trafalgar Square on Sunday 2nd February. Our Girl Guides are currently working towards their World Cultures Badge this term.

Artwork by Platanos pupils are currently on exhibition at the Tate South Lambeth Library until mid-February. This is a wonderful recognition of our talented artists.

Our Year 9 pupils had the opportunity to participate in the new IntoUniversity Leadership programme that focused on developing skills for higher education and future employment.

We are pleased to announce that Platanos College is now a member of The Mayor's London Schools Gold Club for excellent schools. 

The Club recognises and celebrates exceptional schools that have succeeded against the odds in improving pupils' aspirations and achievements. The Club also facilitates the sharing of good practice.

Lord Mayor's Show, 11th November 2013
 

Our Army Cadets and St. John Ambulance Cadets were on parade at the prestigious Lord Mayor's Show on Saturday 9th November 2013. The Show is an annual televised event with more than 6,500 people and 150 floats on display to welcome the new Lord Mayor.

Army Cadets partnership at Platanos College, 9th October 2013
 

We are pleased to announce that Platanos College has successfully established an Army Cadets partnership with St. Dunstan’s College this year. 

The partnership agreement was officially signed on Tuesday 8th October 2013 by our Chair of Governors, Mr Alabi, and the Headteacher of St Dunstan’s College.

Platanos College top of the Similar Schools Performance Table, 10th September 2013

 

Platanos College was this week congratulated by the Minister for Schools, David Laws MP (Department for Education), for its excellent performance in the new 2012 Similar Schools Performance Tables published this year.  We are one of the top performing schools in England on this measure.

These tables compare schools against those with near identical intakes and Platanos College stood out in two ways. Firstly, we were ranked number one in the table. Secondly, over 10% more of our pupils achieved five good GCSEs including English and Maths than is typical of a school of our intake. An excellent achievement for Platanos College.

Platanos College was also recently named by the Sutton Trust as among the best in the country after an analysis of the 500 top-performing schools and is a member of the SSAT Leading Edge network of high-performing schools.

PGL residential trip, 9th September 2013

 

Our entire Year 7 group of pupils had the wonderful opportunity to attend a PGL multi-activity residential trip over one weekend in East Sussex.

Successful work experience for Year 10 pupils, 6th September 2013

 

The work experience programme for our Year 10 pupils last academic year was a real success.  

The programme took place over the last two weeks of term with pupils on a whole variety of placements. This ranged from law firms and businesses to schools and other public services.

Selected Key Stage 3 pupils (including all Year 7 pupils) will be on a PGL multi-activity residential trip from Friday 6th September.

 

Sports Day, 16th July 2013

 

Sports Day this year was again a great success following on from the Olympic spirit of last year!

On the field in abundance were some very good athletes with potentially bright sporting careers ahead of them!

Graduation Evening took place on Friday 5th July this year and it was a wonderful occasion with many achievement awards being presented by our Headteacher and Chair of Governors.

The annual Key Stage 3 Awards Evenings aim to recognise and celebrate the academic and extra-curricular achievements of all our pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9.

This year, the awards ceremonies took place over three evenings, which were well attended by parents, carers, staff and pupils.

End of term activities, 21st June 2013

 

Many exciting end-of-term activities will commence from Monday 1st July and continue until the last day of term. As a result, there will be disruptions to daily lessons.

The activities include a programme of educational trips to enhance learning for the whole of Key Stage 3, our Barcelona trips, Grammar School Pathway exams, revision workshops, Sports Week, end-of-season tournaments, music concert, Key Stage 3 Awards Ceremonies, Graduation Evening, Sports Day, CHABOP Awards Day, Business Fair and many more!

We would like to wish our Year 10 pupils the best of luck, who will be on leave from 1st July to begin their Health and Safety qualifications, followed by work experience on the last two weeks of term.

Finally, we continue to wish our Year 11 pupils all the best, who are on study leave and in the middle of their exams! 

  

Platanos College on BBC News, 20th June 2013

 

In an Ofsted report published today (entitled "Unseen children") to mark 20 years since Ofsted first studied the achievements of disadvantaged children, it was highlighted that some children continue to be let down by the education system.

Educational trip to RAF Brize Norton, 7th June 2013

 

On Wedesday 5th June, our pupils had the wonderful opportunity to attend an educational trip to the Royal Air Force in Brize Norton, Oxfordshire. 

The visit was extremely enriching. Pupils were able to meet different professionals and apply the knowledge they had gained in school to flight planning and navigation. The pupils then had the lucky opportunity to board the Tristar airliner and fly out to the North Sea to observe Typhoon jets refuelling mid-air in a real operation!

Platanos College named as one of the best schools in the country by the Sutton Trust,  3rd June 2013

 

Platanos College was today named by the Sutton Trust as among the best in the country after an analysis of the 500 top-performing schools. 

Recent research by the Sutton Trust revealed that many top-performing schools were socially exclusive as a result of their locality, but Platanos College bucked this trend.  The analysis showed that Platanos College was in the top 5% of schools with a significant proportion of pupils above the national and local average attaining good GCSE results regardless of their social background.

Platanos College is also in the top 100 schools for the progress made by its pupils on free school meals (as recognised by the Schools Minister, David Laws MP, Department for Education).

End of term activities, 13th May 2013

 

The final two weeks of Term 5 sees the beginning of the GCSE exams for our Year 10 and 11 pupils. Our Year 11 pupils will shortly be on study leave.

We wish our pupils all the best in their exams!

In addition, many pre-planned end-of-term activities will be taking place from the beginning of this week until the end of Term 5 next week.  This includes a whole programme of educational trips to enhance learning, revision workshops and tuition classes, end-of-season tournaments and more!  As a result, there will be disruption to normal lessons.

  

Anne Frank Trust Campaign to the Prime Minister, 3rd May 2013

 

Are you thirteen in 2013? What kind of world do you want to see?

Platanos College pupils are taking part in the Anne Frank Trust Thirteen in 13 Campaign to write to the Prime Minister. The Campaign commemorates 70 years since Anne Frank wrote her diary at the age of 13.

As part of the campaign, our pupils will be writing to the Prime Minister to tell him what they think would make a better Britain for young people. The best letters will be published in The Times!

Platanos College wins the Jack Petchey Speak Out Lambeth Finals!  27th March 2013

 

At Platanos College we place an immense value on debating and public speaking as we believe this provides our most able pupils with intellectual stimulation outside of the classroom that facilitates the development of higher order thinking skills.

Our pupils, Patrick Ballesteros and Shana Kay Harwood, took part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Lambeth Finals and delivered truly inspirational speeches, with Patrick beating the stiff competition and declared the winner!

Olympic Concert at Stockwell Park High School, Friday 27th July 2012

 

The Olympic Concert involving the Beijing Symphony Orchestra and Lambeth Music Service took place at Stockwell Park High School on Friday to mark the start of the London Olympics.

Business and Enterprise RISE Challenge, Monday 16th July 2012

  

This academic year, our Year 9 pupils have been involved in the RISE (Rural India School Enterprise) Challenge, raising money for our partner school in West Bengal, India.

A total of £400.64 was raised by three teams of Year 9 pupils for our partner school!

Our winning team, Team ROAR (Reach Out and Rise), then competed in the annual HSBC Dragons' Den Final. The team won the Entrepreneurial Award for Business Acumen and achieved a 2nd place for their Dragons' Den presentation!

Sports Day, 11th July 2012

  

Sports Day this year was immensely successful. Once again, pupils and staff alike took part with great enthusiasm in anticipation of the London Olympics!

One highlight was undoubtedly the whole school Olympic spirit as pupils and staff stood side by side replicating the five Olympic rings out on the sports pitch.

Children's University Graduation, 29th June 2012

  

The school had its first group of pupils graduate from the Children's University on Wednesday 27th June 2012! The graduation was held at South Bank University with 48 young graduates receiving their awards!

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, 8th June 2012

 

Our pupil, Melissa Branco, was the only school pupil invited to the Queen's Jubilee Lunch at Westminster Hall on Tuesday 5th June 2012! Melissa also met Prince Harry and Prince William as well as Katherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Following the event, Melissa was interviewed on the BBC One London News programme (1.30pm) and on BBC Radio London 94.9 (6am), on 6th June 2012.

Save our MUGA pitch

18th May 2012

 

Since our outdoor sports pitch (sometimes called the Multi-Use Games Area, MUGA) was built, it has benefited our pupils and the community and demand has been high.

We would now like to increase our pupils' and local people's opportunities in sport by extending the use of the MUGA pitch after school. To do this, we need to ask Lambeth for permission and we need your support!

With the Olympics coming up, this is a great opportunity to share the health and fitness benefits of our excellent sports facilities with the community!

To date, we have received over 1,000 signatures and letters of support!

Our Army Cadets at the Worshipful Company of Fuellers meeting, 20th April 2012

  

Our Army Cadets from the 77 Rifles Detachment did us proud as Guards at the Worshipful Company of Fuellers meeting held at Mansion House.

This was a wonderful occasion for our Cadets, which included Joel Idahosa, Shekinah Gloria, Joao Albuquerque and Farhana Begum, who all had the opportunity to meet and talk to dignitaries and the Guest of Honour, HRH Prince Edward, about the many things they have learnt as Cadets.

Schools Minister Nick Gibb launches the National Reading Competition at our school, Tuesday 7th February 2012

 

The Schools Minister, from the Department for Education (DfE), launched the National Reading Competition and spoke about reading at Stockwell Park High School on the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of the great novelists, Charles Dickens.

The launch was opened with wonderful speeches from our pupils.
